After the end of both wars, the First World War and the Polish - Russian War of 1920 the surviving soldiers were given the chance to settle and buy land in the Eastern Borderlands of the fledgling Polish Republic. The amount of land was determined by how much a man could purchase or if he was a valiant soldier the State would award him that land free of charge. There was assistance provided in terms of cheap loans to those that needed them. This is the rough percentage of the total distribution of the settlers within the four main districts
Most of the settlements were destroyed, and the ones that managed to survive did so by the "Ukrainian neighbours" occupying the settlements when their original owners were deported. There were cases that the "New" owners were already waiting to move in when the original occupants were hearded of to cattle wagons to be deported to the Siberian outposts.
An incomplete list of the settlers is available, click on the corresponding link to go to that list.
