Short Description/History

On the Gnizna river. First mentioned in the chronicles for the year 1211.

In 1648 the regiments of Ukrainian rebel Hetman Chmielnicki laid siege to the city.

CASTLE - 1626-31. Situated on a mountain and surrounded by swamps. Designed by V. Scamozzi and built in the Renaissance style by the architect Van Peen the castle combines features of a palace and bastion fortification reflecting the European defensive architectural traditions.

 Zbaraz is also mentioned in the film Ofniem I Mieczem, the defense of the town forms part of the film
